- A slipper.
- Men: higher rank began to show their status in the length of the toe of their shoe. These shoes were often called Poulaines. Today you might hear them called Elf Shoes. Men were also known to wear boots in the Renaissance. Commonly men, usually of lower birth, wore a simple leather shoe. These shoes had simple leather soles and were ankle high. The soles were often sewn or nailed on to the upper portion of the shoe. Toward the end of the Renaissance era some upper class men were known to wear elaborate shoes made of satin. Mostly shoes were of the slip on fashion. Late in the period shoes began to buckle or lace on. Women: In the renaissance some wore a shoe called the duck billed shoe that closely resembled the Mary Jane. These shoes often had slits in the toes and were jeweled. It would have been a tragedy to show a women’s shoed feet in this time. All the same, shoes became more elaborate in the renaissance. For what men’s shoes grew in the toe women’s shoes grew in height. Chopines made their way into Europe via the trade routs. They were perfect for keeping one elevated above the mucky roads.
